Is the end of M just the start of AI?

In January 2017, Facebook announced that it was shutting down M, its personal assistant service that combined humans and artificial intelligence (AI). When compared to Facebook’s extensive use of AI, M was never particularly significant. In fact, Facebook counts on AI every day to make sense of text, speech, photos and videos for billions of people.

Following in the footsteps of Apple's Siri, Google's Assistant and Amazon's Alexa, Facebook launched M in 2015 as a helpful assistant in Messenger, powered by AI. However, M wasn’t just a chatbot that was trained to provide text responses based on previous conversations. It had the power to take care of practically any task, because people were really doing the work for it.

Depending on where in the world you are, you may have differing opinions on the growing use of automation and robotics in the workplace. While some regions fear robots taking their jobs, others are ready to embrace new technologies that promise to improve working life for employees.

Without AI, Facebook wouldn’t be able to block offensive content, identify the most relevant memories to show users in their news feed and, perhaps most importantly, spot Facebook posts that indicate whether a user is having suicidal thoughts.
