What is it you do, again?

It's fair to say that not many of my friends and family truly understand what I do for a living. One year into my public relations career, I still get asked what it is I actually get up to at work. It's a fair question that I often find quite difficult to answer in one short sentence, especially since every day is different. My circle of friends is made up of a textile designer, a hairdresser and an NHS worker and their ideas of what PR entails stem from what they've seen on Absolutely Fabulous.

To help explain, here's a rundown of the five tasks you're most likely to find me doing on a daily basis.

1. Content production

Out of all the tasks I handle regularly, producing content probably takes up most of my time. As a technical PR agency, the content Stone Junction produces requires a lot of desk research. This is one of my favourite parts of the job. As someone with a non-technical background, I love finding out more about the industries our clients work in and researching upcoming industry trends. The type of content we produce varies from technical blogs, to more sophisticated opinion pieces and white papers.

2. Media relations

The term, media relations, refers to consolidating the relationship between your client and its relevant media. It involves a wide range of tactics, from organising journalist meetings to media interviews and pitching articles to journalists over the phone or by e-mail. The result of all this hard work is getting your client's press releases or technical articles in the media.

For the process to be successful, you need to know the media and the individual journalists and understand what kind of stories they are looking for. It takes practice, but being interested in what you're talking about, being polite and finding the right person to pitch to are the first steps to becoming a media relations expert.

3. Social media

Checking and updating social media channels is an integral part of a PR executive's job. It's important to keep in the loop about trending topics and news stories, so I'll often spend my lunch break perusing Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to find this information.
PR may be a difficult industry to work in at times, but there's not many places where checking your social media profiles would be considered work.

4. Liaising with clients

At Stone Junction, we call our clients at least once a week. The purpose of these calls is to chat about the work we've been doing and for our clients to share any news they'd like us to publicise. On top of this, we also produce monthly reports for our clients, which highlight the work we’ve done and the results we’ve had over the past month.

5. Newsjacking 

Newsjacking is the process of capitalising on a popular or breaking news story. For it to be successful, we have to act quickly. After checking national news websites and papers in the morning, we'll contact our clients to suggest relevant opportunities. After this, it's all hands on deck to draft a response, send it to our client for approval and issue it to the media.
