How to use Google social search to promote your business

Regular readers will remember posts on this Blog from last year in which I highlighted the importance of having a Google profile and the future impact of Google social search.

This week, Google social search has been rolled out in the UK and the impact is already huge. I've seen evidence today that it can bump a site from the bottom to the top of page one of Google.

For those who don’t know, if you're signed in to Google, your search results may now highlight relevant content that's created by or shared by your social connections. Furthermore, beneath certain search results you may see the name and photo of your friends who have shared the sites those results display.

Google’s definition of the content that may appear is:

• Websites, blogs, and other content that's shared by or created by your friends
• Images that are shared by your social connections
• Relevant articles from your Google Reader subscriptions
• Profiles of people you know beneath results from social sites like Twitter and Flickr
• Web content that has been recommended or shared by others using the Google +1 button (which is a bit like the Facebook ‘like’ button – Ed)

However, these results will only show up if you are signed into your Google account.

If that’s the case, here are the kinds of people Google will decide that you are connected to:

• People in your Gmail (or Google Talk) chat list
• People in your My Contacts group in your Google contacts
• People you're publicly connected to through social sites, such as Twitter and FriendFeed, that are connected to your Google Account or Google profile
• People you’re following in Google Reader and Google Buzz
• People who are public connections of your immediate, public social connections. This means that if you follow a friend on Twitter, and he follows five people, those additional five people may also be included as social connections

So, if you want to see more results from your contacts, you just need to ensure that your Google profile is up to date.

If you don’t want to see those results, make sure you aren't logged into Google when you do the search.

If you want to increase the likelihood of other people seeing your recommended results when they search for something in Google, then you need to make sure you have plenty of social media profiles. These should include, at least, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and your key niche sites.

You should also share lots of content via those sites. Point five of the second list in this Blog means it’s also more important to connect to social media influencers in your sector.
