Three things you can do today to improve your social media presence

Social media as part of a Technical PR, Engineering PR, Industrial PR, Manufacturing PR or Electronics PR campaign.Social media is a hot topic amongst industrial marketing folk. The debate on whether or not to engage appears to have died down and been replaced with a discussion on how best to get involved and who should manage the process. The benefits, such as improved search engine optimisation and the ability to begin building a tribe of ‘followers’ who are interested in your brand are self evident.

But the biggest question I come across regularly is, ‘how do I move from simply having profiles on the likes of Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube to having a genuine audience’. And here are my three most common answers:

Develop and promote core content: You need to have a medium on which to create core content (such as a Web site or Blog) and you need to create content regularly. You can then disseminate this amongst your audience. Remember, no matter how much a person loves a brand they are unlikely to engage with it unless it engages with them.

Influence the influencers: Find the people who are already influential in your market and influence them. This could mean convincing a YouTube user with a mountain of views to ‘favourite your video or providing good reasons for Twitter users with large followings to re-tweet your content.

Become the influencer: The next step is to become the person with a mountain of page views or a large group of followers. You can achieve this organically over time with applied effort. There are no real shortcuts although there are, of course, techniques to be applied. Unfortunately, the best technique is to be interesting!

Apply these three rules regularly and you will find that a year of effort in social media and you will be regarded as an expert. More importantly the content you create to promote your business, whether that is technical PR material or something else, will have a new and larger audience.
